Hawthorn Berry Lip Balm

While hawthorn berries are cherished for their medicinal properties, these little red fruits also boast numerous benefits for the skin.

Nourishing hawthorn berries are a source of vitamins and minerals that help to boost overall skin health. They are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant rich, helping to soothe irritated lips and to protect them from environmental damage.

Hawthorn berries combine with tallow for a lip balm is that deeply healing and moisturizing. Like our cell membranes, tallow fat is typically 50-55 percent saturated, making it highly compatible with our skin. Tallow also contains vitamins which are crucial for skin health, helping to reduce redness, age & weather related damage, and dry, chapped lips.

Equipment

  • 1 heat proof jar or heat-proof glass measuring cup
  • 1 double boiler or crockpot

Materials

  • Hawthorn Berries dried
  • Olive Oil

Hawthorn Berry Lip Balm

  • 1 1/2 tbsp hawthorn berry infused olive oil instructions below
  • 1/2 tbsp beef tallow
  • 3/4 tbsp bees wax
  • 3 drops lavender or peppermint essential oil optional

Instructions

Hawthorn Berry Infused Olive Oil

  • Fill a dry,heat proof jar or heat-proof glass measuring cup about half full with dried hawthorn berries. Pour in the olive oil, making sure the leaves are fully submerged and covered with at least an inch or so of oil.
  • Gently heat the herbs over very low heat (ideally 100–140° F) for 1 to 5 hours in a double boiler or crockpot.The oil has finished infusing when the color and smell of the herb has been imparted. At this point, turn off the heat and let the oil cool. 
  • Strain the oil through a cheesecloth and it’s ready to use! Pour any excess infused oil into a glass jar and be sure to label it including the date the oil was made, type of herb used, and type of carrier oil used. For best shelf life, store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Hawthorn Berry Lip Balm

  • Combine the infused oil, tallow, and beeswax in a double boiler. Heat gently until completely melted, stirring every so often.
  • Remove the mixture from heat and stir in the essential oil, if desired. Pour into lip balm tubes and let cool. You may need to use a rag to wipe the drips off the sides of the tubes once they have solidified.
