A Holistic Treatment Plan for Bladder & Urinary Tract Infections

If you notice a frequent need to urinate, pain or burning during urination, and/or a feeling of incomplete urination these are good signs that you have an infection of the bladder and/or urinary tract. The usual allopathic method for treating urinary tract & bladder infections is antibiotics.

However, most bladder infections can be easily resolved with natural remedies when treatment is started early. If you have any of the above symptoms starting the following program as soon as possible can keep the infection at bay.

Start drinking unsweetened cranberry juice and urinary tonic tea blends at the first sign of infection.

Cranberry juice is a wonderful tonic for the kidneys. It helps to balance their acid/alkali balance. Drink 1 quart of cranberry juice daily in small amounts throughout the day.

Dilute with the following tea blend to make the tart juice more palatable and to aid in soothing & toning the urinary system.

Urinary Tonic Tea

  • 1 part nettle
  • 1 part corn silk
  • 1 part marshmallow

Prepare as an infusion. Let steep for about 30 minutes. Use roughly a tablespoon of herb blend per quart of water. Combine tea with equal parts of cranberry juice.

Switch to a simple, healing diet

Immediately eliminate all sweets.

Avoid:

  • complex foods
  • alcohol
  • coffee
  • caffeine rich foods

Include:

  • steamed dandelion greens, asparagus, or string beans
  • miso broth
  • veggie soup
  • steamed veggies
  • plain steamed grains

Sugar feeds the bacteria that is causing the infection and exacerbates the situation. Eating a simple diet allows the body to focus its energy on healing, not digesting. The kidneys must continue to filter everything that you take in to your body so it is best not to consume things that overburden them at this time. Include kidney toning greens & veggies to promote healthy kidney function.

Treat acute infection

Drink 1/4 cup every half hour of the following tea blend:

  • 2 parts uva-ursi
  • 2 parts buchu
  • 1 part cornsilk
  • 1 part cleavers
  • 1/2 part plantain

Powder and encapsulate the following herb blend. Take two capsules every three hours.

  • 1 part golden seal
  • 1 part marshmallow
  • 1 part ginger

Rest and allow the body to heal

Cystitis is a serious infection. Many people with this issue try to work and go on with their lives as if nothing was wrong. However, this is not in their best interest. Staying quiet and taking a day of rest allows your body to focus its energy on healing, helping you to recover quicker.

Keep the kidneys warm

The kidneys readily respond to readily to warmth. Taking a hot herbal bath or put warm ginger poultices over the kidneys will help to restore balance and well being.

Relieve stress & pain and support the nervous system

Stress burdens the kidneys. And the pain that comes with a urinary tract infection can certainly cause more stress and further exacerbate already frazzled nerves. Try the following formulas as needed to help relieve pain and promote relaxation to allow the kidneys to heal.

Valerian Tea:

  • 1 part valerian root
  • 1 part comfrey root
  • 1 part licorice root
  • 2 parts peppermint

Prepare comfrey and licorice as a decoction. Remove from heat and let infuse with valerian and peppermint for 45 minutes. Drink as needed.

California Poppy Tea:

  • 1 part California poppy flower or seeds
  • 1 part chamomile
  • 1 part oats
  • 1 part comfrey root

Prepare as an infusion and drink as needed.

Skullcap tincture – Take 1⁄4 tsp diluted in 1⁄2 cup water or tea 3 times daily

Continue to support the kidneys after the acute infection has passed, even if you are feeling better and not having symptoms anymore.

Follow the following guidelines for at least a week:

  • Keep drinking cranberry juice throughout the day
  • Continue to follow a simple diet, avoiding sweets and foods that will burden the kidneys
  • Drink one cup 3 times daily of the following tea blend

Kidney/Urinary System Tonic Tea

  • 2 parts dandelion root
  • 2 parts cornsilk
  • 1 part cleaver
  • 1 part marshmallow
  • 1 part nettle
  • 1/4 part ginger

Decoct dandelion root and ginger. Remove from heat add remaining herbs. Let steep for about 30 minutes. Use roughly a tablespoon of herb blend per quart of water.

This program is often effective when started at the first signs of an infection, however, if symptoms persist and/or worsen it may be time to consult with a trusted medical professional. If you’re prone to chronic urinary tract or bladder infections, regularly drinking one of the urinary tonic teas mentioned above can help tone and soothe the urinary system to help prevent future infections.
